Thirumalai Nayakar Palace
Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is a stunning example of South Indian architecture from the 17th century. Built by King Thirumalai Nayak, who ruled Madurai from 1623 to 1659, the palace is celebrated for its grandeur and unique blend of Dravidian and Islamic styles. The palace was once part of a much larger complex, but today, it stands as a remarkable testament to the opulence and architectural finesse of its time. The Mahal is noted for its vast courtyard, supported by massive pillars adorned with intricate stucco work and elaborate arches that reflect the influence of Islamic design. The stucco work features delicate motifs and designs, showcasing the artistic mastery of the craftsmen of that era. The palace originally consisted of two parts – Swargavilasa, used by the king for entertainment and official functions, and Rangavilasa, which housed the royal family and was designed for residential purposes.
